Angela Fritz has been drawn to the desert since
her first Big Bend trip for an elementary school
spring break. “No landscape is as inspiring or
comforting as one with rugged red mountains
under an infinite blue sky,” she says.

Thomas Gaffeney, a resident of South
Brewster County, river guide, bookman and co-
founder of the annual WordOff who is presently
moving towards completion of his first novel,
divides his time between Terlingua and New
York, where he caddies at a country club in the

Jim Glendinning was born on a Scottish farm
and educated at Oxford University. He now lives
in Alpine and writes local travel guides. He is
presently working on his memoirs about his trav-
els to 136 countries over 50 years.

Barbara Novovitch moved to Marathon in
1999 after retiring from Reuters international
news agency, where she worked as an
editor/reporter in Washington, New York, Hong
Kong and Paris. She has covered West Texas for

University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo. Her
