W Twin Peaks, Alpine henever I think of Twin Peaks, the old TV series comes to mind. Alpine is nothing like that… is it? In the book, this beautiful image is printed in soft browntones, and the clouds look like they could jump off the page. Better yet, it brings back great memories of the many days I’ve spent here and the good friends that I’ve made. D The Pecos High Bridge riving from Houston to Big Bend, Hwy. 90 is the road of choice. There are so many things to see and do along the way...unlike Interstate 10. Even though it’s a bit east of Big Bend proper, to me the Pecos River is the gate- way. Maybe it’s because I was raised on the tales of Disney’s Pecos Bill or Judge Roy Bean. This highway bridge was com- pleted in 1959 and, at 273 feet, it’s the highest highway bridge in Texas. When I cross the high bridge and see hundreds of miles of peace and quiet spread out before me, I’m free. Cenizo First Quarter 2010 19
