The Buffalo Soldiers
& Fort davis National historic site
The grounds of Fort Davis National Historic Site can tell many stories, such as
those of the early peoples who hunted in the area; the establishment of a military
post in 1854 to protect California-bound travelers; the Army’s experiment with
camels; its brief occupation by Confederate soldiers; and its re-establishment
shortly after the war ended. But perhaps no story is more interesting than that of
the Buffalo Soldiers who called this fort home from 1867-1885.
