A container garden in an enclosure which protects from freezing in winter and overheating in hotter months. The garden produces up to 25% of the Sexton’s diet from September to April. Their water needs are provided for entirely from rain water catchment, which includes a flush toilet, drinking water, bathing, cooking, cleaning, and gardening. The bathhouse contains a shower and sink. Used water, known as grey water, runs from the drains under ground to water the eucalyptus trees surrounding the building. The trees were grown from seed Kevin collected at La Kiva. Electricity comes exclusively from a collection of solar panels, generating a total of 2,000 watts. With the system they have unlimited power during the day, and enough storage capacity to run lights, a refrigerator and freezer, phone, internet, and a 42” TV whenever needed. Cenizo Spring 2020 27
