PHOTO ESSAY by Clint Young

My first visit to Big Bend area was in October of 2017 . The moon was full . I was with a woman , and we camped for two nights up Pine Canyon . She was saving me from myself .
Those nights under the stars and moon pulled me from a darkness I ’ d been in for months . The cold beers on the porch in Terlingua quenched a thirst I didn ’ t know I had . The rumbling washboard rhythm of Old Maverick Road moved me in so many ways .
She , a documentary filmmaker , traveled with a collection of cameras and other tools of her trade . Some of these tools I was allowed to touch . Thus began a new age in my journey as a photographer . I was inspired again . After a few more days in the region , we took the long way home .
Since that experience , I ’ ve returned to the area several times . In January 2022 , I made Marathon my home .
Every day I am in awe of our starscapes . Of the beautiful sunrises and sunsets . The way the wind whips . I love to frame a scene in the lens and dream that I could somehow convey to the viewer the emotion of the moment in which I clicked the shutter .
Sometimes I get close . Take enough time with the right image and you can almost hear the breeze and smell the sweet petrichor of the wet desert floor .
