Dorothy Alexander is a poet, memoirist, story-
teller and author of five poetry collections, two
multi-genre memoirs, and two volumes of oral
history. She reads and performs her poetry
throughout Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas and New
Mexico. She currently resides in Santa Fe, New

Rani Birchfield is a writer at large in the Big
Bend region. Born in Kathmandu, she inherited
the wanderlust of her parents and loves travel,
food and wine exploration, and meeting odd

Perry Cozzen passed away in June of this year.
He was a native of La Mesa, Texas and an Air
Force veteran. He retired to Fort Davis in 2012,
and his stories frequented the pages of the
Cenizo. He will be missed.
Nyeema Haigler is a 20-year-old Bronx native
studying at Claflin University in North
Carolina. She interned at Guadalupe
Mountains National Park, studying the Buffalo

Shawna Graves had a hot spell cast upon her by
the Chihuahuan Desert a long time ago.
She has been wandering in its vast escapes since
2013, studying people, plants, critters, and sci-
ence in remote outposts under twinkling stars.

Mattie Matthaei was born and raised in Big
Bend, from Terlingua to Alpine. She lived in
Austin for many years where she designed and
built homes. After leaving Austin she lived in
Ruidosa, eventually returning to Alpine where
she found the Hotel Ritchey waiting for her to
restore it to its past glory. e-mail:

Trisha Runyan is fourth generation Mexican
American, now living in Presidio in the home
her great-grandfather built 101 years ago. She
writes prose and poetry under viga ceilings and
with a perpetual cup of coffee. Other activities
include work on the Presidio County Historical

Lonn Taylor AKA The Rambling Boy, is an his-
torian and writer. He retired to the Big Bend
after many years at the Smithsonian Institution
in Washington, DC. He writes for the Big Bend
Sentinal on occasion and appears weekly on

Doran G. Williams lives in the Post Oak belt of
Lee County, Texas. He is semi-retired; spends
most of his time writing, minding his veggie
garden, and taking care of his flock of laying

Wendy Lynn Wright is an artist, musician,
freelance graphic designer and most recently,
political activist. She lived in the Big Bend from
2000 to 2016, but now resides on the west side

Carolyn Brown Zniewski started publishing at
age nine, with a neighborhood newsletter called
The Circle. From 1992 – 2006 she wrote a recipe
column for two newspapers in Minneapolis,
