Jim Bones is a photographer, writer and educator.
He has photographically illustrated 12 books celebrating
light, life and everything. He is currently
developing highway interpretive signs with the
Brewster County Tourism Council that feature the
diversity of the Big Bend.
Mary Bones is part of the staff at the Museum of
the Big Bend where she has been a curator for more
than 10 years. She has curated numerous exhibits,
including the annual fundraiser Trappings of

George Bristol is founder of the Texas Coalition
for Conservation and past member of the National
Park Foundation. He has received the lifetime
achievement award from the Texas Nature Conser -
vancy and the national Pugsley Medal for parkland

William H. Darby III doesn’t like to carry a camera
when he hikes but always has a pen and paper
in his backpack. Journaling helps him to slow down
and absorb more than trail miles.

Larry Francell, a native Odessan, has lived in and
loved the Big Bend for many years. He recently
retired as director of the Museum of the Big Bend
but continues to keep his hand in the museum business
in a variety of ways.

Ron Payne spends winters as a park host at Big
Bend National Park and summers in Ohio. After
years of writing sermons, he is now content to write
commentary and poetry.

Bill Smith is a carpenter, cabinetmaker, tech guru,
musician and printer. A Marathon native, he taught
science in public school and lives in Sanderson,
where he works with the Terrell County Museum.

Lonn Taylor is a historian and writer who moved
to Fort Davis in 2002 after spending the final 20
years of his professional career at the Smithsonian
Institution in Washington, D.C. He grew up in Fort

Matt Walter retired from the U.S. Coast Guard in
1996 and is now the historian and curator of the
cartographic collections at the Museum of the Big
Bend and also teaches history at Sul Ross.

and educated at Oxford University. He now lives in
Alpine and writes local travel guides. He is presently
